Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry - Review

Peter and the Starcatchers (Peter and the Starcatchers, #1)

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋

Peter and the Starcatchers is a prequel to Peter Pan that fills in the gaps up until the beginning of his most famous adventure. Peter, an orphan, along with his friends are put on a ship for an unexplained journey. A girl of about the same age is also travelling on the same ship with her governess. She's taking a slower ship to follow her father who is guarding a mysterious trunk on a different ship. Peter and Molly's ship happens to be named the Neverland and they meet up with a horrible pirate called Black Stache and his first mate, Smee, and they also want the trunk. The adventure ahead changes Peter's life forever.

As a free offering from YA SYNC, I downloaded the audiobook immediately and was pleasantly surprised to hear Jim Dale as the narrator. As ever, I am surprised that he is the only man doing all of those voices.

Overall, I loved every second of this fast-paced adventure and seeing how events here tie in with Peter's most well known adventure. The author is so imaginative in creating the star stuff, its effects, the place we come to call Neverland, and the characters themselves. Peter is an excellent character, but my favorites are Molly and Black Stache. Molly is a very brave, admirable, and intelligent young starcatcher in training. Black Stache makes an awesome villain (view spoiler).

You'll love this if you like retellings, the tv show Once Upon a Time, Peter Pan, and/ or the voice of Jim Dale.

I read this book from July 13 - 16, 2014 and the review is also available on Goodreads.
